We were in Ximen originally for our costume hunt. Unfortunately many costume shops were not open. So we detoured  to try out very different things. The ice-cream you see here is no ordinary ice-cream. They are… (Continue Reading…)

very strange indeed.

OMG..

One of the most interesting buildings in Ximending. Almost everything is painted on. It’s an Italian brand shoe store.

So here’s a food stop for the day: Opium Pearls.

So I asked the store clerk why this particular “fengyuan" (nicknamed Pearls in some places; yes it’s the same kind in bubble tea) was called the Opium Fengyuan. The store clerk said because it’s like an opium; once you tried it, you’ll get addicted to it.

It’s actually all shredded ice under the pearls, red beans, and sweeten taro.

If you don’t look closely, you’d just think it’s one of those traditional shredded ice shops.

The menu of the ice-cream shop that offers 73 kinds of ice-cream.
You’ll find the strangest ones on there.

Under the “vegetable category: ginger juice, bitter squash, corn, parsley.
Under the “natural flavours category: .. curry, wasabi.
Under the “miscellaneous category: Taiwanese eisbein (pig’s foot), Taiwanese meat powder, tofu, seasame oil and rice-wine flavoured chicken.

但, that being said, 還是還滿難接受的味道…

Wine tasting is nothing, try this other kind of tasting! The three kinds we ordered: Curry (sweet) ice-cream, Pig Foot (Taiwanese eisbein) salty ice-cream, and Kinmen Kaoliang ice-cream.

We were going to order the Seasame oil with rice-wine chicken thing… but the shop person told us that we would probably be better off ordering 1 salty flaour instead of 2. Guess what, she was CORRECT.

Looks like some ordinary ice-cream eh? It’s actually a Taiwanese rice wine from Kinmen called Kinmen Kaoliang (rice wine). Its alcohol content is 58%. You only drink a small shot every time and you don’t keep it in your mouth long because it will literally burn it.

The owner of the shop said that among the strange flavours, the most acceptable and most ordered flavour is the pork powder one. He said originally these salty ice-cream were made for people who cannot have sugar/glucose in their diet (eg. diabetes). But then we ponder on that for a while and realized… maybe they just need sugar-free instead of eisbein or chicken flavour ice-cream…

Mr. E. said that the eisbein ice-cream tastes more like cooked pork/pork leg that has been placed in a fridge for a week – the layer of jelly… That doesn’t sound too enticing eh? :p But maybe people can get used to the taste if they have more of it. Who knows? By the way, the circled part in there is a small piece of pork.

So here’s our Game of the Day:

We even video taped our talk but before I can figure out how to flip a MOV file by 90 degrees and modify with the excerpt cutting thing, it’ll be hidden somewhere. hahaha.
