Earthquake is just a matter of life in Taiwan. There are hundreds of large and small earthquakes happening all the time. When we were in elementary school, we’ve been “programmed" to react or plan our escape route when a large earthquake strikes. Most of the time, we just shook the earthquakes off. But this time, things were a bit different. Some 28km from our oceanview window at the Hualien…. (continue reading..)

—————————————————————————
… Farglory Hotel, an earthquake (or what we nickname as the earth ox 地牛) was brewing in the seemingly calm sea.

We had to drive along the east coast to get to Hualien via the Suhua Highway.. but the Highway really is more like any other mountain road because it just winds it way along the coastal mountains.

Some parts of the streets were still blocked by fallen rocks.  A few sections of the Suhua Highway is still under reparation due to previous typhoon and earthquakes.

Scenes along the way – This is a scenic drive because you have the tall mountains on one side and the whole Pacific Ocean (unobstructed) on the other side.

This section of the highway only has 1 lane left and other lane was just simply “gone"…so they’re now trying to construct this artificial thing to “rebuild" the missing highway lane.

Our black car turned grey after traveling on the Highway.
FARGLORY HOTEL Hualien

We were back to the Farglory Hotel in Hualien for this holiday. Actually, this trip to Hualien was scheduled in October. But then a typhoon came so we had to postpone the trip all the way to December.

Main cafe area in the lobby.

The Western buffet restaurant in the hotel.

Breakfast room.

On the small path to the green house.

The green house where a Taiwanese drama was filmed.

Flowers in the green house.

The peach colors of the flowers in the green house.

The restaurants on the ground floor. This one is a Chinese restaurant.

We dined again at the Japanese restaurant here.

I like the color and style of the elevator.

The western restaurant. I love the style.

Outside the seaside walking hall connecting the main building to the outdoor swimming pool and indoor spa complex.

Sunset without the sun.

To the karaoke bar in the hotel.

Inside the bar.. It was like a small courtyard with outdoor bar, slot machines and small doors and stairs leading to private karaoke rooms.

The fanciful bar.

This bar feels a bit serial. The colors of this place somehow reminds me of the Moulin Rouge ( I mean the movie).

Overexposed and blurred. But this was what the view was like at the main entrance of the hotel with darker sky colors.

The hotel sits on a mountain by the ocean so you can
see the Pacific ocean on one side and the city from the opposite side of the hotel. The city lights were not still. They were all flickering so there were like glitters shining on the black canvas.

So we were doing some silly dance thing when the floor started to shake a bit and then the whole room started to shake up and down and sideways like we were getting thrown around in a box. The hanging lamp was making 179 degree swings and the unlocked doors were slapping against the walls and making huge sounds. At that moment, we thought the buliding was going to fall apart!! & We’ll just all crash into the ocean or something.

Earthquake that just happened. 21:02 – a 6.8 Earthquake was about 26km from coast of Hualien and 46km deep in the ocean. So in other words… the epicenter of the earthquake was just… OUTSIDE OF OUR WINDOW….!!!  The day before we were just saying what would happen to this place if there were a tsunami because it’s basically just “by" the ocean.

So we survived the earthquake and lived to see the sunrise the next morning. Everything seemed normal and carried on its own course.

It was a bit misty but… nothing seemed to have changed.

The calm ocean the next morning after last night’s earthquake.
