After the Winter Olympics in Vancouver earlier this year, many venues used for the games are still in the stage of being transformed into something that will (hopefully) earn $ in the long run. The Richmond Oval is no exception. We went on a tour to visit see the… (continue reading…)
… place that gave Richmond’s history a different chapter cover. The Richmond Oval was the venue for speedskating at the 2010 Winter Olympics.
The construction of the Oval started in November 2006 and took about 170 million CAD to build.
The Oval was actually opened in December 2008. It was completed ahead of schedule.
Oval
The plan for reusing the huge space that was used for speed skating during the Olympics. Now there will still be a skating rink (smaller ‘though) and a lot of other spaces for basketball, badminton, etc.
There are gym equipments on the second floor. The ground floor is still in the process of being transformed. The Oval is famous for its wooden ceiling, which gives it a very “Canadian" appearance. The actual color is lighter than it appears here. The wood used here is pine-beetle kill wood.
Sunlight shining through the specially processed glass to give the room a different tint.
This is the kind of details in the architecture that if not pointed out by someone, you’d probably never notice. This channels rain water to a central water reprocessing zone. The cool thing about this is that when there’s a lot of water, the lines that you see here actually will look like it’s moving.
This is an eco-friendly building. The rain water from the water channels will be collected here in this pond and reprocessed to feed back to the building for flashing the toilets, etc.
Rowing teams can practice in this indoor space regardless of the weather.
Richmond’s history lies in fishery. The decorative art with the huge red fishing net is suppose to represent something of the local heritage.
The blue glass of the oval under the sunlight reflects a sea of blue.
These glass on this poles are designed in a way to show different colors of the rainbow at different spots when you view from different angles. It works even better when it’s sunny. The colors are very visible.
At the Continental Plaza in Richmond, there’s a new Japanese restaurant with this very interesting interior deco. It’s a bit “young" but also traditional at the same time.
Takoyaki Udon! Never had this anywhere else. Tasted quite good!
