Four Treasures of a Scholar’s Studio at South Beauty 881. South Beauty is a restaurant chain in China more known for its Sichuan cuisine (a Chinese regional cuisine that’s famously spicy). But it also has good non-spicy dishes. We went to the South Beauty that was… (continue reading…)
… closest to our hotel. It turned out to be one of the nicest restaurants around with the mix of old western mansion with modern interior design elements.
This old mansion is located on the Yan’an Road in Shanghai.
The old mansion is converted into a contemporary lounge bar.
The place feels very much like the Gotham Steakhouse in downtown Vancouver. The interior looks a bit old and dark.
Guess what I’m reading? Definitely nothing related to what would’ve be on those real classic scrolls. This is the tea menu. It’s actually kinda heavy.
Thinly sliced pork and shredded carrots with homemade sauce – one of its signature dish.
Yummy squid appetizer.
Sea cucumber that melts in your mouth. But it’s actually quite expensive to eat sea cucumber here (the real ones of course…)
Chef making the tofu desert. The tofu desert here is a bit different because it can be salty or sweet.
The “spices" or sauce for salty or sweet tofu desert.
The tofu desert here looks a bit green… and the texture is quite different too. I think I still like the Taiwanese one better.
This is pretty creative as well.
You could write with the brush that you can eat later on. The brush is made of dough and tastes just like finger cookies.
The interior of the second floor of the old mansion.
Why?
Before we were done with dinner, there was a huge thunder storm so we were basically stuck in the restaurant for an hour or so. Although our hotel wasn’t too far away, the constant lightening and heavy rain just kept us stranded. It was also impossible to get taxi too because that’s just the way things are in Shanghai. When it’s rainy or when it’s rush hour, you’ll know you have little chance of finding a taxi so don’t wander too far off unless you have a car or other means of transportation!
