Count Down to 2011

“You may have rare treasure."

So we ended up in Asakusa in Tokyo during day time and back to our hotel in Shinjuku in the late afternoon on the last day of 2010. Everyone in town was getting ready for the new year. Shops, streets and department stores were filled with people. We…. (continue reading... )

… moved to the 39th floor of our hotel for the last 2 nights in Tokyo. Time flew by so quickly and before we knew it, we were packing and preparing to leave the place again. Count down in Tokyo turned out to be a bit not as expected… but it was a different kind of memorable experience I think.

On a shopping street in Ueno. It’s like a place where people buy things for new year I suppose (similar thing in Taipei: [ Taipei ] Chinese New Year Shopping ). We just got pushed into the crowd. Not exactly fun but it was definitely something else.

Our room this year at the Keio Plaza is on the 39th floor with a view of the Tokyo skyline + some visual obstruction from the monumental structure of the Tokyo City Hall in front of our building.

Executive floor lounge 的 view.

Sun is setting. The view we have this time doesn’t turn out as impressive as what we had back in 2006 (see my previous post: [Tokyo] City without Edge ).

Night view from the 39th floor. Getting close to the count down hours. The streets are almost empty.

We watched the popular new year show until it was time for count down.

There was no bursts of fireworks across the cityscape nor cheers for the new year. Seconds quietly slipped us by and we just slid into 2011 with the slow and deep chimes of new year temple bells and the 00.00.00 flashing silently on the TV broadcast.

WAS THAT IT?? No countdown??? What was that???
Come again??

Perhaps new year should be greeted with such solemnity and quietness. Perhaps cheers for the new year should be buried in the depth of hearts and wishes and sincere prayers behind the closed eyes. Perhaps I have missed another meaning for wishes for new year all this time and have found it this time.

A temple at another part of Japan that is covered by thick snow.

Next day is another day. Woke up by a brass band playing on a plaza.

The empty streets of Ginza on January 1st. All stores are closed. Ginza and its streets filled with brand name stores. But because it’s a super national holiday for the day so the streets are very dead. Next time I must come to Japan when it’s not freezing cold as well. Missed a few good places to go this time.

Before I knew it. It was time to go. This is not some shopping mall or theme park. This is in the Haneda Airport – International Departure Terminal. This area is called the “Edo Street".

The sky lounge in the Haneda Airport. Like the new lounge in the Taipei Songshan Airport, this is very designed in a clean and natural way. More about the new lounge in the Taipei Songshan Airport in a later post.

" The person you are waiting for will come."

hmm…. I think that’s a good start!
