So a visit to the Gastown in a must when you visit Vancouver/. It was one of the earliest areas to develop in Vancouver and it sits right next to the most western terminus of the Canadian Pacific Railway. Many of the old buildings from the early 1900s are still around. When you walk down the street, you might.. (continue reading..)
… find some resemblance of New York & London.
This is one of the must-visit tourist stop – the old steam clock in Gastown. Actually this steam clock is not that old (since 1977 ) but it is one of the few remaining ones that still work. The maker of this steam clock , a Canadian, also have been installed in Otaru Hokkaido. If you know of that city, or rather a nice small town, you’d know its rich history in something similiar but also very interesting.
We were going to the Gastown Guu Japanese Restaurant but found that it was closed!!! so we searched for a more reasonably priced restaurant nearby.
The Water Street Cafe was right across from the old steam clock. It’s pretty spacious inside and the food was ok.
But it’d probably be safer to stick to the standard drinks. Ordered this “Champagne cocktail" that tasted and looked nothing like Champagne. It was more like cough syrup and not exactly cheap either.
The main course (we ordered the smaller volume). The spaghetti with tomato sauce was pretty good. The spaghetti with lots of small clams was just okay (a bit too much of the tiny clams).
This is another landmark in the area. But it’s pretty much the end. If you keep going, you’ll be heading towards the Chinatown area.
There were these mini double decker in pink. I think it’s a hop on hop off bus where you can take a tour around the city (mainly downtown I think).
On our way back we passed by this small cafe and was attracted by the Mango Splash and the sign that says “Voted the best cheesecake in town".
The Mango Splash Cheesecake. It was pretty yummy and there were bits of mango in there. The texture was more like a sponge cake ‘though. Not the thick ones we usually see available.
Seats by the window in the cafe.
Outside of the Cafe. I thought those huge glassy lamps were pretty cool.
We walked to the Canada Place. & saw this Dim Sum kart
Canada Place
There are always Alaskan cruises around the Canada Place area. The passengers were onboard they were doing the emergency training before the cruiseship can sail out. How I miss the days on cruiseship!
From the Canada Place, you get a spectacular view of the mountains, the ocean and the vastness of space. Across the channel/inlet is North Vancouver.
On our way back to the hotel, we saw this interesting modern building that has “words" to decorate its exterior.
