Last time we stayed at the Fraser Suites near the city hall. We decided to stay in the Myeongdong area this time – at the Lotte City Myeongdong. Last time I stayed at a Lotte Hotel was in Hanoi. Although this one we stayed at this time wasn’t as grandioso, I like how it is clean and has a modern simplicity to it.

The glowing blueman outside of the hotel. The hotel’s check-in lobby is actually on the second floor.

To get to the Tongin Market (통인시장) from the Gyeongbokgung Station, you’d have to walk for a bit. But the good thing is there are quite a few interesting shops and cafes along the way. This was one of them. The smell of good coffee will draw you into this modern-chic looking coffee shop.

I like how the packaging shows what the coffee tastes/smells like.

Finally reached the market but it looked quieter than I thought. Maybe because it was a week day and past lunch hour.

The market dates back to the Japanese occupation era (around 1941). It was set up for the Japanese residents back then. After the various wars, it became a popular market among the locals. Now this area has about 75 stores selling mainly fresh veggies/fruits and also cooked food.

This is also like a “bento street" where you get a plate and buy what you want to eat to put on your plate as you walk down the street.

You can exchange food with a type of coin that mimics those used in the old days. You can only use it at stalls that show a special sign.

One of the must-eat dish here –  spicy rice cake. There were many stalls that sell it but there was 1 stall that was believed to be the “original".

We had the spicy one + non-spicy one + 2 egg rolls courtesy of the owner. Although it tasted quite good initially, I thought it was a bit greasy..

Interesting names for the herbs…

這邊後面的巷子其實有點錯中複雜, but we managed to find this bookstore – 首爾室內最老的書店 – Daeo Bookstore / Cafe.

A old book store from the 1950s preserved to show what it was like for a couple to raise a family and earning a living in this small space.

Other than the old looking buildings, there were quite a few interesting new buildings. But I fell in love with this flower shop’s design.

Clean and chic and not too much clutter or dried plants, etc.-looking messy, etc.

Burger & Lobster!
Actually quite a few flowers shops here. & Burger & Lobster!

We took our time around here but had to be on our way to the Chungmuro area for our dinner. It was certainly interesting. More about it in the next post.
